2nd Lyceum of Kos

The School

The 2nd Lyceum of Kos is a state school with 260 students and 35 teachers (2020) that is situated on the European border island of Kos. Kos is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea.

The school is an upper secondary school preparing students, aged 15 to 18, for university education in science, economics and humanities departments, hence its pupils, coming from different social backgrounds, are well-motivated and high achieving. The school is well equipped (library, 2 ICT labs, physics lab, gym) and has a clear intention to provide international influences such as students’ exchanges to create various arenas for language and interdisciplinary collaborations in projects using ICT and digital forums, thus to develop good knowledge of foreign languages, linked with key competences for employability such as ICT skills, creativity and team-work.

The Projects

The school has participated in several EU projects and coordinated an Erasmus+ project named “Safe Internet for All” designed to increase awareness about internet safety matters. The latter was considered a good practice project example and a success story. The school obtained an eSafety Golden Label from 2015 to 2019, due to many contributions related to eSafety. This experience, a etwinning project as well as research activities held in the school community (annex), revealed the necessity to focus on Digital Competence (DC), as a Key competence for the current globalized society, involving confident, safe and critical use of Information Society Technology (IST). This project aims towards the development of functional and critical digital literacy and internet safety skills, coping with new IST threats, achieving a higher degree of DC for the school Communities, helping the participating schools to develop (or adjust) their own e-safety policy, supporting the taking up of digital technologies and of innovative and open pedagogies in education (use of Virtual Learning Communities, use of ICT tools such as Google Classroom and wikis, use of Collaborative Learning, Peer learning, etc.).
